Goal Setting

A New Year – A New You

Do you have plans for this year? Something you want to accomplish or  get done or maybe a place you want to visit?

Every year many people make New Year Resolutions but how many of us actually make tangible and measurable goals for ourselves?

Almost everyone knows about S.M.A.R.T goal setting but how many of us actually do it?

Let me ask you – what do you want to do this year or where do you want to go or what do you want to see happen before the year is done? Have you written it down? Have you written it down in the S.M.A.R.T format.

If you don’t know where you’re going – how will you know when you arrive?

I know you probably already know what S.M.A.R.T means in terms of goal setting but let me refresh you and enlighten those of you who may not be aware of what a S.M.A.R.T goal is all about.

S.M.A.R.T is an acronym that stands for:

Specific: This is the What, Why and How of your goal.

Instead of I’ll get a new car

I’ll get a 2018 Make & Model color with these accessories because their safety rating is.. from XYZ Auto Sales

Measurable: You want to measure your performance toward your goal so you have something tangible.

For our example: I’ll have a deposit of $xx to put down on it by MM/DD/2018.

Thats something you can measure to see if you are making progress and on track to reach your goal.

Achievable or Attainable: You don’t want to get frustrated by setting a goal so high that its not realistic.

Again, in our example, you may not want to set a short term goal for a car whose deposit requirement  will costs more money than you make in one year.

Relevent(results oriented): It includes the expected results.

In our example maybe the result of obtainning a new car would give you the ablity to start a new job that doesn’t bind you to the bus routes.

Time sensitive: Give your goal a deadline. This will push you to do the tasks you need to do in order to meet your goal. It minimizes procrastination and creates a sense of urgency to make it Relevent.

In our example: I’ll pickup my new Make/Model color vehicle from XYZ Auto Sales on MM/DD/2018.
